Ten Backpacking Trip Essentials

I’ve had backpacking trips that included rain, snow, lightning, rockslides, altitude sickness, and twenty-mile days – all in a summer weekend. Wilderness trips can be dangerous, but you can make then less so, by having the following ten essentials in your backpack.

1. Knowledge. What good is a compass.if you don’t know how to use it? Play with matches if your fire-making skills are shaky. Learn what to do when you see a bear. Read a little, practice a little – knowledge is more likely to save you than gadgets.

2. Map and compass. These are together, because that’s the way you need to use them.

3. Matches and lighter. Bring both, or waterproof matches and a fire starter of some sort. Having two ways to start a fire is much safer.

4. First aid kit. Buy a pre-packaged one or build your own. Make sure it has pain relievers, bandages, disinfectant, and notes on basic first aid procedures.

5. Foot care. Your first aid kit needs moleskin, and maybe a pin, to treat blisters. Your feet have to be well cared for when you’re hiking miles from the nearest road.

A Look at Ivory Chess Sets

Ivory chess sets have a long and distinguished history, going back nearly to the advent of the game itself. Ivory has been used for many centuries in the construction of chess sets. Some of the earliest chess pieces still in existence are made of ivory.

The British Museum displays a few ivory chess pieces from the 7th and

8th centuries found in modern day Uzbekistan. These ancient chess pieces are in a different form than modern day chess pieces because they come from a time when chess was primarily an Islamic game. The pieces had a much different appearance because they reflected a different society. In the 19th century, Nathaniel Cook and John Jaques created the first set of Staunton chess pieces out of ivory. The Staunton style of chess pieces became the standard that is still in use today.

Ivory is not nearly as common today as it was hundreds of years ago when historical ivory chess sets were made. Now, ivory chess sets are usually only for collectors. Adolescent Anger Management Strategies

Adolescent anger management is becoming more prominent in our society. Traditionally, children who enter this last acute phase of bodily and mental development can go through some rough times. As kids enter their preteen and then their teenage years, chaos can ensue at times for everyone involved. A child or young adult may feel that his or her body and mind are out of control occasionally, and the parents and teachers who supervise children at this age may tend to agree. Anger can spring out of nowhere to challenge innocent requests and reasonable expectations. Yet kids between the age of twelve and sixteen sometimes react in unpredictable ways, surprising those around them and even themselves and requiring the intervention of adolescent anger management strategies.

Alcohol and Drug Treatment

You find it everywhere, very often it’s even a sign of “coolness” or a sign of quality life style. But you know…

Do you like an occasional beer, or maybe a sip of wine? It’s no big deal in moderation. We all love to kick back with a fine wine or frosty brew. However, too many individuals take this perk to a whole new level. How much alcohol is too much? Well, if you don’t know, then you might want to do a reality check. Don’t make the mistake of becoming complacent with your social life. Too many college kids do this with drinking and partying. Suddenly they’re downing a case a night just to stay satisfied. It’s time to be aware, people. You have to control how much you drink and how often. If you don’t, then you just may end up in an alcohol and drug treatment program. Sound good? I doubt it.

Prepare For Opportunity – From Galley Slave To Multi-Millionaire

In the epic classic book and movie, Ben-Hur, the main character, Judah Ben-Hur, through an accident and tragic misunderstanding is arrested and sold to work in the mines by the Roman authorities. Despite going from the son of a wealthy family to slave, Ben-Hur refused to fall into despair. He exercised and built his strength up. When he was ready he inched his way up the mineshaft and made it to the top. Unfortunately, he was easily captured because he was blinded by the sunlight after spending so much time in the dark mine shaft.

His captors were so impressed with his strength that they sold him to the Roman navy as a rower for their warships. Again Ben-Hur refused to give up. He used his great strength to become the best rower on the boat. Eventually, he was given the special privilege of not being chained to the boat.

Later in a great naval battle, his boat was rammed and sunk. Because Ben-Hur was not chained, he was the only slave to escape. He was able to save the admiral who had given permission to have him unchained. The admiral was so grateful; he took him to Rome

It can be a bit nerve wracking to take on any new sport, but there is perhaps no athletic activity that intimidates beginners quite as much as skydiving. Since the majority of people who are interested in skydiving have never jumped out of a plane before, it makes plenty of sense that skydiving can cause even the most experienced and courageous athletes to come down with a sudden case of the jitters. Help for Baby Boomers

Much talk has been made of the looming retirement of “Baby Boomers.” Most recent there has been several articles written in various media concerning their use of home equity to retire on. Eileen Powel of the Associated Press said “home equity may be baby boomers’ salvation; while comments of the Sydney Morning Herald says proceeds from selling their house is what six million Australian baby boomers are counting on for their retirement. Personally, I don’t want to sell my house in order to afford retirement.

Recently the Trustees of Social Security and Medicare published the annual report. The report stated that Social Security could be insolvent by 2040 and that Medicare Taxes could double by 2012.

I think we have to ask ourselves these questions:

Can I count on Social Security?
Can I manage the health insurance premiums after retirement?
Is my savings or 401K adequate?
Can I afford to retire?

At my current 9 to 5 the insurance premium for family coverage is $110.00 A WEEK. And that’s just my portion of the premium. Above and beyond what my employer pays.
